Schools across the country are facing unprecedented challenges in the wake of the Covid pandemic – but some are struggling more than others.
In a report released this week, the government's education watchdog commented that, while schools were making good progress to recover from the last two years, many providers continue to face challenges – some with longer-term consequences.
For some schools, the Covid pandemic struck at an already-critical time as staff battle to improve standards following damning Ofsted inspection reports.
Ofsted’s grading system evaluates schools on each of the following categories:
As of May 3, there were 63 secondary schools in England rated as inadequate – the lowest grade given by Ofsted. These are listed below.

Schools are graded on a four-point scale – grade 1 (outstanding), grade 2 (good), grade 3 (requires improvement) and grade 4 (inadequate).
Please note, these ratings may have changed since the time of writing and schools may be waiting on more up-to-date reports to be published. Schools that have closed or converted to academies but have not had a full inspection since the change are not included on the list.
