Many of us might be wondering how we can inject a bit of colour back into the moody month of January…

But for Taryn de Vere, the answer came when she spotted a bottle of toilet unblocker in her bathroom – and imagined herself dressed in the same coloured clothes.

The mum-of-five set herself the challenge of styling her outfits based on an item in a house every day in January and posting a picture on her Instagram page.

They have included outfits based on everything from a tin of baked beans and a box of Quality Street to a packet of Always Ultra and a tube of toothpaste.

And her posts have gone viral, attracting more than a thousand new followers a day.

Accessories designer Taryn, originally from Australia but now living in Donegal, Ireland, says: “The last few years was really hard work and I haven’t had a break.

“I decided to take January off and do something creative, but then Covid numbers went up and I knew it would have to be something at home.

“On December 31 I was sitting on my bed and my eye spotted the sink unblocked in the en suite. I thought, yes,

“I have the colours to do that.

“Then I got really excited and went around the house finding all the items I could dress up as.

“Each day I just dress inspired by a different object, doing my best to replicate the packaging of whatever product it is.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the response. I get messages from people saying the first thing they do in the morning is check my Instagram feed to see what I’m wearing.

“I’m really pleased I’m helping to brighten up other people’s January too.

“My one rule is that I have to use the clothes I have and not buy anything new for it, but I’m a hoarder and been collecting charity and vintage clothes for years, so it’s not hard.”

Taryn has now decided to carry on her challenge into February, when she’ll try to dress as items in other people’s homes.

She said: “I’ve been getting a lot of messages and requests asking me to dress up as something that’s important in their country or town, and some are really interesting.

She also wore a Vanish costume one day

“I think it will be a fun challenge, connecting with the world and people’s pride in their local brands.

“Other people have messaged me saying, ‘please can you keep doing this forever?’ Maybe I will!”
