Pub praised for refusing to reopen doors until all staff can get Covid vaccine

A pub has been praised for refusing to reopen its doors until all staff get a chance to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

The Bulman in Kinsale, Cork, could reopen next week once the go-ahead for indoor drinking and dining is given in Ireland.

But owners decided to wait a little longer, to make sure all staff members are protected, Cork Beo reports.

Husband-and-wife duo Pearse and Mary O'Sullivan said the pub will continue to provide outdoor service as its staff is mainly made up of young people who have not been fully vaccinated yet.

The owners took to social media last night to say that they feel it would be wrong to open to vaccinated customers while their team wait for their jabs.

They said: "It looks like very soon we will have the option to open inside to fully vaccinated people.

"While our hard working and brilliant young workforce remain unvaccinated we at the Bulman have decided to remain as an outdoor dining and drinks venue until further notice."

People praised the pub for putting their staff first, even though this may have an impact on the revenue as capacity will be reduced.

A person commented: "Fair play…. nice to see a business looking after their staff first."

Another said: "Very brave and right decision, Pearce and Mary! Well done!"

One more added: "Well done Pearse and Mary, very sound decision, we’re proud of you."

At least two other well-known bars and restaurants, in Donegal and Sligo, offered their support and said they would be following the same policy.

The Cabinet is meeting this morning to discuss the plan to open indoor hospitality – which is expected to happen on Monday.

Government officials and representatives of the sector yesterday discussed the final details in a series of meetings.

An electronic Covid scanner system is being developed by Government to allow businesses to check Covid vaccine certificates.

After final agreement by Cabinet, the guidelines will be published after the legislation is approved by President Michael D Higgins.

Vintners Federation of Ireland Chief Executive Padraig Cribben said the guidelines that will allow pubs to reopen on Monday are almost complete.

Mr Cribben said: "While our members will be relieved to reopen next Monday there remains a significant challenge in policing the vaccine pass. It will require the full support of the public to ensure this temporary solution runs smoothly."
