Prince William has said children must be inspired with the "optimism, confidence and enthusiasm to build a sustainable future" in a visit to Kew Gardens today.

He was at the venue with his wife the Duchess of Cambridge, where they met with children to talk about taking care of the planet.

The couple took part in the Generation Earthshot event with kids from The Heathlands School in Hounslow "to generate ideas to repair the planet and to help spark a lasting enthusiasm for the natural world".

Also at the event in Kew Gardens were the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, explorer and TV presenter Steve Backshall and Olympian Helen Glover.

They all joined with the students to take part in a series of fun, engaging and thought-provoking activities developed as part of Generation Earthshot, an educational initiative inspired by The Earthshot Prize.

The visit came ahead of the inaugural Earthshot Prize awards, which are being held on Sunday.

William's ambitious £50million Earthshot initiative aims to find solutions to the planet's problems throughout the next decade.

William and Kate are attending the star-studded ceremony, hosted by Clara Amfo and Dermot O'Leary, at Alexandra Palace in London.

Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and KSI are among those performing – and Dame Emma Thompson, Emma Watson, David Oyelowo and Mo Salah will be handing out the awards.

It comes ahead of the COP26 climate change summit, which is being held in Glasgow from October 31.

COP26 is the deadline by which countries are expected to bring forward more ambitious plans, under a five-year cycle, to get the world on track to meet the Paris goals.

The 2015 Paris Agreement commits countries to keeping temperature rises to well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit them to 1.5C – beyond which the most dangerous climate impacts will be felt.

William and Kate are expected to attend COP26 along with the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
