Lilibet Diana name choice may end up a ‘curse if Sussexes want privacy’, expert says

Lilibet Diana name choice may end up a ‘curse if Sussexes want privacy’, expert says

Meghan and Harry's choice of baby name will serve to heighten public interest in their daughter as she grows up, a royal expert has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have previously cited concerns over their privacy as a reason for leaving the UK and building a new life in California with son Archie.

But a royal commentator has said that with a name referencing two of the most famous women in history, it will be hard for their daughter to escape the spotlight.

The pick is a tribute to both Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, with the first name being an affectionate family nickname for Her Majesty.

Writing in The Independent, Sean O'Grady said: "Less trouble booking a table at a fashionable restaurant, getting a ticket for the must-see musical, or – you never know – a job.

"The downside, of course, as with all celeb stuff, is that giving her such a name will merely heighten interest in her as she grows up".

He added: "Her name may turn out to be more of a curse than a blessing, if the poignant experience of the past is anything to go by."

O'Grady said the name will boost speculation about who "Lili" most resembles, "whether she inherits Diana’s sense of style or the Queen’s sense of duty; and, of course, who she’ll be dating."

Meghan gave birth to her second child Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor on Friday, June 4, at 11.40am at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara.

    The baby – a younger sister for the Sussexes' two-year-old son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor – weighed 7lbs 11oz.

A statement from the couple's press secretary said: "It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world.

"Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11.40am in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.

"She weighed 7lbs 11oz. Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home.

"Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.

"Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honour her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.

"This is the second child for the couple, who also have a two-year-old son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

"The Duke and Duchess thank you for your warm wishes and prayers as they enjoy this special time as a family."
