    Huge explosion in Durham city centre building site as firefighters rush to scene

    A huge explosion has taken place in Durham city centre, with fire crews rushing to the scene.

    The blast is believed to have happened at a new building site in an old passport office, reports ChronicleLive.

    The full circumstances of the incident are not yet known.

    Firefighters from five stations raced to the Milburngate development at just after 2pm.

    Durham Constabulary said on Twitter: "Fire crews are currently at the scene of a fire in the #Milburngate development in Durham City.

    "Milburngate Bridge, Framwellgate & Crossgate Peth is currently closed.

    "We are asking people to avoid the area and find an alternative route."

    County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service added: "5 crews are currently at the scene of fire at the Milburngate development in Durham City.

    "Firefighters from Durham, Spennymoor, High Handenhold & Newton Aycliffe were mobilised to the scene just after 2pm. Please avoid travelling into the city centre."

    One local said online: "Fingers crossed all ok."
