Exhausted medics on a Covid ward are run off their feet after a spike in cases.

Over 120 Covid patients fill five wards at the Royal Preston Hospital, piling yet more pressure on staff in the traditionally busy winter period.

Covid has also increased staff sickness absences to double the usual rate for the time of year, adding to the burden.

Kevin McGee, chief of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust which runs the Royal Preston, said: “The first couple of weeks in January are always our busiest time.

“But on top of that we’ve got two other things causing immense pressure.

“Firstly, we’ve got approximately 120 patients in our beds with Covid, so that’s four to five wards completely taken out.

“In addition we’ve got significant staff sickness as well, running at about 10%.

“That’s double what would normally be for this time of year – and again, that’s Covid-related.”

Of the 124 patients in the hospital with Covid last week, four needed the use of a mechanical ventilator. Five patients died at the hospital last week within 28 days of a positive test.

A specialist Nightingale hub has been set up in one of the hospital’s car parks.
