The forensic artist who created Ben’s image believes they should be updated for missing children every four years, as happens in the USA.

Tim Widden, 41, who spent 20 hours working on the picture, said: “The US National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have a whole team of forensic artists who basically make age progressions.

“For some reason it is not used as a tool for an investigation so much in the UK.

“I think it would be a good idea to do regular age progressions because they change so quickly.”

To create Ben’s image, Tim studied photos supplied by the Daily Mirror and by mum Kerry Needham.

They were of Ben as a toddler, his two uncles, Kerry at various ages and Ben’s sister Leighanna.

Tim said: “Some things remain relatively stable over the years, like the region around the eyes.

"Also, you could see Ben’s eyelids as a baby but in some people you can’t.

“The root of the nose is something else that stays in a very similar position in relation to the eyes and the ears.”

Tim said he started with a baby photo of Ben and added “standard changes”.

He said: “The lower half of the face elongates and generally goes downwards and forwards.”
